Famous for His Uncertainty Principle

Werner Heisenberg is famous for his uncertainty principle, which began quantum mechanics. He was only 23 when he came up with it. Very basically, it proves that reality is what is observable. What you see limits all other possibilities, at least as far as you know. This principle is part of the theory that supports parallel universes, where every single choice and all the possibilities are played out in a distinct universe. The hat ribbon in the painting is his principle related to energy and time, showing simultaneous time. It means the more you know about where a particle is, the less you know about when. Ambassador Romanescu from Mandelbrot

How could I have forgotten that before the trip to Locke, there was a brunch, featuring a breakfast casserole recipe of my mother's and a centerpiece of Romanescu Cauliflower. Except, of course, it wasn't a head of fractally delicious broccoli, as the guests quickly realized, it was The Great Ambassador Grungrun from the planet Klandathu. Sadly, the Ambassador, being busy and all, had other things to do besides take a road trip with us.

Locke Us

Yesterday, four friends, a little dog named Moxie, and I, took a spontaneous trip to the California Delta town of Locke. You know, near Isletown. As you can see, the Dai Loy Museum of gaming was open. All mid-west/east coast transplants, I think it did us good to get out of the cities (Oakland, Los Angeles, San Francisco) and see some countryside and agriculture. (Although driving over the Sacramento River, various interesting bridges, and along the tops of levees separating canal from field, it was obvious that we were somewhere else, indeed. )

The Hall of Women Scientists

The December show features artist Jennifer Mondfrans. A colorful portraitist, Jen's works will include many important figures from science, famous and not. Inscribed on the plate at the bottom of this painting: Lise Meitner, Physicist (1878-1968). "She gave the first theoretical explanation of the fission process. While exiled in Stockholm during the second world war, she kept in constant collaboration with her partner in chemistry, Otto Hahn. Although the Nobel Committee overlooked her vital contribution, the element Meitnerium, a transuranian element, is named after her. Lise basks in the sparks of fission." And, how!

It's a Sign

Look at the delightful sign Bunnie made for the entrance to the gallery. (I had forgotten to make one.) I still need one for the street that communicates "you are at the right place" if, indeed, you are. It should also say: "something interesting is going on" if, indeed it is. It should be temporary. You should be able to chain it up. Or maybe it shouldn't be a sign at all, but a large white flag, illuminated brightly, waving from a flagpole on the roof: THE SOMETIME GALLERY.

A Good Show

The first show in the gallery was hung the evening of November 14, with the help of the artist, Bunnie Reiss, and a friend. There are 33 pieces in all, including lithographs, embroidery, and textiles. Prolific and playful, Bunnie's range is impressive. Particular favorites were her dog portraits, stitched-up go-kart wheels, lithograph ponies, and a found and embroidered vintage textile, It is that easy. If you saved your 2007 Burning Man ticket stub, then you already own a piece of Bunnie's work.
